Case Number 6

The patient was a 34 year old woman who noticed the sudden appearance of a breast mass on 9/9/79. She thought that she probably had some trauma to that breast. She was on birth control pills until 9/13/97 when they were discontinued (4 days after she noticed the mass). This patient previously had a normal breast exam in June of 1979.

On 9/10/79, her breast exam revealed that the upper half of the left breast was engorged, indurated, and was larger than the right breast. Mammogram done 9/27/79 was normal.

This patient consented to surgery on the breast on 11/15/79 and a simple mastectomy was done. The diagnosis was diffuse infiltrating duct cell carcinoma. The estrogen receptor value was 6.4 Femols. The patient was sent to Miami, Fl. where axillary dissection revealed 46 of 49 nodes positive for metastases. The patient also had bilateral oophorectomy done at the time of the axillary dissection. This patient developed bone metastases as well as cancer in the right breast and died 9/17/81.
